The Institute of General Practice Management

Jo Wadey, Chair of WSPMA, working with three other brilliant Practice Managers (Kay Keane, Robyn Clark and Nicola Davies) and supported hugely by James Dillon from Practice Index have created an organisation to represent Practice Managers.

It’s called the Institute of General Practice Management, with a website very kindly designed by Wessex LMC.

They also have a Facebook page and Twitter @TheIGPM.

Nationally, they have support from:

  • the BMA (Dr Chaand Nagpaul and Dr Krishna Kasaraneni)
  • Practice Management Network
  • The NAPC
  • Wessex LMC, Professor James Kingsland (who is looking at accreditation for the organisation)
  • Dr Nikki Kanani (NHSE)
  • and Dr Mark Porter.

Local to Sussex, they have Adam Doyle (Accountable Officer & Chief Executive of Sussex CCGs), including his team; Sarah Henley, Hugo Luck and Karen Sallis.

Julius Parker from Surrey and Sussex LMC has sent this statement in support:

“Surrey and Sussex LMCs are delighted to support the formation of the Institute of General Practice Management. Practice Managers are absolutely key to the success of General Practice, providing the leadership, innovation and skills that all practices need to deliver holistic patient care in a complex environment. This is a hugely important step forward”

They also have Nick Houston and Katherine Saunders (Chief Operating Officers) from the two local federations IPC and ABC and have offered their help if needed. Nick Houston already plays a big part in West Sussex Practice Managers.

THEY ALL WANT TO SUPPORT IGPM!

So next steps, they will have a paper setting out the structure and the aims/objectives of the new profession circulated to all the National bodies for their final approval and support.

Keep an eye out for upcoming webinars via their website, Facebook and Twitter - they're always very interesting and motivating!

Please follow them on Twitter and make loads of noise! Also sign up to Facebook for newsletters and other information. Practice Index are very kindly managing communications for IGPM as the numbers of managers from primary care signing up continues to grow.

They are going to need lots of volunteers as they want to represent the whole of the UK on their new Exec and Programme board. If you are interested, please do email jowadey@nhs.net

Once they have lots of PMs on board, and papers approved, they will be writing a business case to get this profession funded by NHSE/I.
